Travel tips for first time travellers

Updated: Apr 10

Going on your first holiday? Exciting right, but it can also be a tad overwhelming. So here is a list of tips and tricks for first-time travellers to make your experience as stress-free and smooth as possible.

First up let's look at planning...

So you have popped down to Linlithgow Travel and picked out your dream holiday and now it's time to plan out your holiday.

Always make sure you have booked a holiday with ATOL protection. We do this with all our holidays at Linlithgow Travel but what does it mean? ATOL ensures customers are not stranded abroad or won't lose money paid to the travel organiser for holidays and flights.

Once you have booked your holiday it's now a good idea to look at your travel insurance. Make sure you have travel insurance including COVID cover. Coronavirus Travel Insurance should cover you for cancellation or having to cut your holiday short due to COVID-19.

What to pack?

Now that you're all booked up and have made sure you have your COVID cover/travel insurance and that your holiday is ATOL protected, it's time to think about what to pack.

For your hand luggage, it is always a good idea to pack the following:

  • A portable charger - It's not always easy to find a charging point or outlet inside busy airports and depending on the aircraft, some planes don't have charging ports.

  • Your Identification papers, documents (passports) and boarding passes are kept together in a wee folder. - It's a good idea to keep all your important documents such as your health insurance, travel documents and visa documents (if needed) together in one place. This will save time at security checks.

  • A resealable liquid container or bag. - Most airlines allow for a maximum of 100ml of any liquids within your carry-on/hand luggage. Make your life easier and less stressful with a transparent, resealable plastic bag (ie, clear makeup bag, ziplock bag etc) for passing through security.

  • Hand sanitiser. - After the pandemic and just in general, it is always a good idea to bring a wee sanitiser with you whilst you are travelling. This can go in with your 100ml liquids and helps keep things hygienic with all the touch points within the airport and plane.

  • Entertainment - Music, a good book, or a tablet/iPad are always good ideas for entertainment whilst on the plane. Just make sure to switch your devices to aeroplane mode and download any movies before you get on your flight.

  • Change of underwear - It may sound odd but it's always a smart idea to pack a spare pair of undies in your carry-on. Why? Just in case your check-in luggage gets delayed, lost or stolen.

Want to save space in your hold luggage? A great tip is to use either packing cubes, you can get these off Amazon, or rolling up your clothes rather than folding them. This will save space, reduce wrinkled clothes and leave room for bringing home souvenirs.
